Bow Tie pattern quilt unusually set in Four Patch blocks. Great combination of vibrant colors gives this a harlequin feel. Unwashed condition. Bow Tie blocks are quilted in straight lines; the solid blocks are quilted with diagonal lines, all contributing to the sense of vibrancy and movement of the quilt. Measures 77" x 81"; circa 1910.
It's difficult to say whether or not the maker of this Fifteen Point Lone Star Quilt set out to make this pattern or whether it got out of control. In either case, it is likely unique. It is interesting that five point stars surround the central image and the overall star essentially has five sides. So maybe this was all intentional? Unwashed, immaculate condition. Wonderful selection of fabrics. Measures 80" square; Pennsylvania origin; circa 1880.
Elegant Robbing Peter to Pay Paul quilt with glazed chintz border. Unwashed condition; one area of faint discoloration but essentially excellent condition. Illustrated in "The Quilt: A History and Celebration of an American Art Form" by Elise Schebler Roberts.

Exceptional applique quilt that qualifies as "Dutchy" in several ways. The fabrics, particularly the use of a printed ground, are typical of the Pennsylvania Germans. The red applique pattern is very reminiscent of the Pennsylvania German scherenschnittes (paper cut outs) for which they are well known. Use of the zigzag border and pieced Bars pattern for the backing are also features typical of Pennsylvania German quilts. Well designed in that the blocks more than alternate: the center ...click for details

This unusual Mennonite quilt from western Pennsylvania is reflective of both the Ohio Amish open center pattern to the west and the Lancaster Amish Center Square pattern to the east.
